Tricky Splits Island --
The subject line about says it all. It's been a while since we had any Tricky news around here, but that's a doozy. He's sort of got his own label now though anyway.

Fight Club merchandise --
The best thing about this site is the one-liner movie posters, which unfortunately I never saw in the theaters. I did get to see the movie last night. It made me nervous and antsy and I didn't wind up going to sleep until about 2:30. Was it the "life-changing experience" that they told me it was? Not exactly, but it was still pretty darn good.

Anyway, my favorite poster: "creates a thick, rich lather... like rabies."

Bellcore changes name to Telecordia -- Tuesday, October 19, 1999
Sure, take a cool, hard-as-nails name like "Bellcore," that implies that you run EVERYTHING, and change it to another combination of syllables. THAT'S as original as a trainwreck.

"Layla" a Most Annoying Song? -- Tuesday, October 19, 1999
I'm sure it will come as a surprise to no-one that, in this Sony-commissioned opinion poll, no artists recording for Sony-owned record labels appear (except Oasis, whose records are released by Sony in America, but who actually record for UK indie label Creation.)

The SID Files -- Saturday, October 16, 1999
Before MP3, before .MOD, before MIDI, Commodore users swapped music in the SID format.

This webpage was put together by one of the guys who developed the format back in the day. I worked with him for a couple years (much later) at a software company in the Ann Arbor area. Had I known at the time that he was a computer-music god, I would have been more properly reverent. Sorry, Craig.

Goofball Image => ASCII Utility -- Saturday, October 16, 1999
You enter the URL of an image into the box. Say,

http://www.nnaf.net/~bpw/images/bpdglas.jpg

Then you click the submit query button, and you get the picture, illustrated in colorful ascii, using what appears to be code from the Swede-produced Apache wannabe Roxen Challenger.

(Like this -- warning, the resulting ASCII file from this specific photo is nearly 400k, so it may take a while to load and slow your machine down.)

That's Entertainment - The Jam Official -- Friday, October 15, 1999
They've been broken up almost 20 years, and they finally have a website. And it's pretty good!

The layout isn't the macromedia flashiest, but it's really efficient and clean, and it gets the point across, which is pretty much the way The Jam would've wanted it back in the day. There are lyrics for all the songs off all the albums, and articles about Paul Weller and, er, the other two guys. (Sorry, Rick and Bruce.) It also serves as the hq for online Jam fanzine "That's Entertainment."

Info on the Jam tribute album, featuring everyone from Oasis to the Beasties to EBTG, is available here.

The Ralph Wiggum Archive -- Tuesday, October 12, 1999
This beats the heck out of waiting for the next time that one episode of "The Simpsons" is on, just to hear Ralph say "I eated the PURPLE berries! Ack... aaugh... it tastes... BURNING..."

God Bless "Ask Yahoo!" -- Tuesday, October 12, 1999
Never afraid to ask the tough questions. It's enough to make you want to sign up for "My Netscape."

Hallelujah, FilmZone lives! -- Monday, October 11, 1999
Predict-o-Scripts, the irreverent movie reviews, and so much more, all preserved carefully at Independent Project, the reincarnation of Big Gun, one of the earliest groups to actually carry quality content on a regular basis.

The Crashsite is preserved, too, miracle of miracles. Reading these sites makes me nostalgic for Netscape 2.0, believe it or not. Remember when Frames would crash your browser? Okay, good time to shut up.

Mariah Carey's semi-official site -- Wednesday, October 6, 1999
Well, you can put a spin on all mess between you and Lauryn Hill, but you can't put a spin on the fact that your new single sounds like you put "Fantasy" and "Dreamlover" in a blender. And for God's sakes, put a shirt on! Nobody wants to see all that (except me - Shortround).

UPDATE: "Heartbreaker" is a reworking, to be kind, of "Attack Of The Name Game" by Stacy Lattislaw, from 1982. And okay, a lot of people want to see all that. I'm not terribly opposed. But all the time? It's called "mystique." That catfight scene was... different, though.

Breakout Sound Studio -- Wednesday, October 6, 1999
Breakout is a sound-production firm in Belgium. The star of this site is Michel Orthier, who was kind enough to provide many samples of himself in mp3 format (see samples section) and in .wav format (see freebies section). If you can handle the awesome power of Macromedia Flash, check this site out and get all these samples. Then, practice sounding like Michel Orthier (imagine Tone Loc channeled through, well, a Belgian guy. If you can't think of what a Belgian guy sounds like, try a German or French guy.) For more of the unforgettable sound of Michel Orthier, also see megacar.com -- does anyone know how to suck sound files out of a Flash presentation??? Please?

Sound America's Misc TV/Radio/Movie Section -- Wednesday, October 6, 1999
By far the best page on the site it is a part of. Tons of theme songs, although curiously no sign of any of CNN Headline News' elusive fanfares. I like the section in the FAQ where he kvetches about not having any more Simpsons sounds, then proceeds to put half the damn Simpsons soundtrack album on here in something called "mp3 Layer 3 WAV format," which doesn't play on either my mp3player or my wav file player. Good luck!

Neat New Arcade-Style Joystick -- Wednesday, October 6, 1999
Looks just like an arcade machine, but maps to keyboard layouts. And there's a Mac/USB version coming out soon!
